Chapter 24
Behind him, across vast distances of space and time, from the place he had left, he thought he heard music too. But perhaps it was only an echo.
Sliding downward still, upon the snow-covered hill, he saw the homes, The laughter on the faces of people inside, the warmth of their love apparent, almost visible. The beautiful, happy scenes touched his heart. He picked up Gabriel, who was now silent. His eyes barely open, his skin turning a bluish hue. Jonas was frightened, and ripped away from the people in the town.

The Giver, alone in his chamber, was lying on his bed, weeping. Oh, what a terrible thing he had done! He had let Jonas’ plans cavort around in his mind, until he believed them plausible. Now that Jonas was gone, his family unit was grief stricken. Not only for the boy, no, but also for the babe, Gabriel, they had lost.
The community was in an uproar. The memories that Jonas released, one by one flooded the mind of the men and women and children in the community. They could not handle it. The pain, hunger, and hate most of all. Not even the happy memories of the world could calm their rage. He was sure he would be released. That, or forced to live with this pain, the pain of knowing.

Jonas clutched the baby to his chest. He could feel it’s heartbeat slowing by the second. He could not let the baby die. He could not let his journey be all in vain. He approached a home, and rapidly knocked on the door. He was screaming now, screaming for help.
A man opened the door, and was frightened by the sight. Jonas was frostbitten, and had a horrible, sickly color to his skin. He held out gabriel, and spoke to the man.
“Please, take my brother. He is not well.” said Jonas. The man took the babe, and called for his wife.
“Gloria! Take the baby. Get it warm.” The wife took the Gabriel, and rushed off, muttering prayers in rapid spanish.
“Boy,” continued the man. “You should come inside. It is Christmas, and you are not well.” The man helped Jonas up, and slowly, Jonas stepped inside. He was cold, and hungry. He did not know if he could take another step. His head was spinning, his vision blurring. He fell to his knees, not able to stand.
With on final word, before he fell to the floor, he whispered.
“Gabriel.” and with that, that was the end of Jonas.
